The
majority of Lisu population live in
such provinces as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai Mae
Hong Son, and Tak. In addition, a small number
of Lisu communities are also found in the
provinces of Phetchabun, Kamphaeng Phet, Phayao,
Lampang, Sukhothai and Phrae.
Costume
The Lisu are another tribal group, which will
fully dress up from head to toe during festivals
and special occasions. Lisu women wear long
blouses with overlapping layers of colorful
stripes stitched from shoulder to neck. Each
woman also has a band of cloth wrapped around
her waist. For decoration, there is a tassel
hung form the back of her waist. The upper
front part of her dress is fully covered with
beautiful silver ornaments. A black, loose-
fiting
pant is worn together with leg pads. When
full dress is required, a black velvet vest
decorated from back to front with silver buttons
is used in addition to a turban adorned with
knitted wool and beads.
Lisu men's clothing is no less
impressive and fascinating. A loose-fitting,
greenish blue trouser is worn with a wrap-over,
long-sleeved shirt decorated with silver buttons.
On any special occasion, men would wear waistbands
with tassels similar to women. The only difference
is that the
tassels
are hung from the front part and not from
the back, In the past, men wore head dresses
made from red, blue. Yellow and black silk.
These are, however, rarely seen today.
A common practice among many
Lisu men is to conveniently use towels wrapped
over a piece of cardboard and wear it on the
top of their head. As for the ornaments, a
large band of silver necklaces are spread
over the chest and bangles are also worn on
both hands.
